Rakugo is traditional Japanese comic storytelling, a performance tradition thatoriginated about 400 years ago. A rakugo performer tells stories of everyday life, offering wisdom and concluding their tales with skillfully delivered punch lines called ochi. In rakugo, a performer uses only a fan and a towel as props, changing neither stage costumes nor settings. The performer’s power of expression met with their narrative skills and the audience’s imagination are the essential ingredients of rakugo.
